Lately, I have been surprised at where the health and fitness field has gone. I have been in the field for over 15 years, and it has changed a lot. Wow! Things are different than they were. At the end of the day, some of the simple concepts in form and technique need to be brought back to the public eye. Doing as many rounds as possible (AMRAPS) is not for everyone. Using catchy terms to take away from science and create a sense of culture is a cool idea, but sometimes those “teaching” it haven’t got a clue about the science of fitness, behind what they are teaching. For example, doing clean and jerk Olympic lifts are not for everyone. Jerking Olympic movements have a place in fitness but when in real life do you actually use those movements, other than when you want to try to hurt yourself? Here are some more of my favorites: eating cookies for a “cookie diet” is absolutely ludicrous and the best one I have seen recently, Wait for it…wait for it… goat yoga. It was being advertised that you can do yoga while goats walk around you and your mat… I mean really? Who pays to have a goat pee on your mat while you hold a tree pose. Yoga was founded back in the 5th and 6th centuries, while I wasn’t there to verify, I didn’t read anything about goats when I looked up the history.
