If you actually break down what it is that needs to be done and focus on how you are going to get it done effectively, you will work more efficiently and have more time doing what you love. You will also have less stress and feel better about your job and your senses of self. Use these tips below to be more productive at work. Start today and see how you build trust among your team and you get more done on a daily basis.

This quote inspired me to write this:

“Time is really the only capital that any human being has, and the only thing he can’t afford to lose.” –Thomas Edison

Top 10 Tips to Be More Productive At Work

  1. Build Social Capital

Build an environment and culture that understands and supports productivity and maintains a sense of urgency. Create a network within your department with positivity and health behind you instead of complaining and eating poorly. If you network makes good choices and has good social capital, it will foster productivity every day.

  1. Get Ready For Tomorrow Before You Leave the Office

Prepare for your meetings and emails for tomorrow. Get everything ready for a good start tomorrow morning. It can help to write a note to yourself on a dry erase board with a good start point for the next day. This will enable you to come in and start your day with purpose.

  1. Put Out Fires As They Ignite But Also Know When To Let Them Burn

Prioritize how you spend your time. Set a schedule for longer term projects and stick to it. If a co-worker comes to you with an urgent need, assess whether you really have time to address it or help them. If you don’t have time, explain to them why you don’t have time instead of just saying you are busy. Give specific details and it will build trust and set a good example for co-workers. It also leads to point number 4.

  1. Be Able To Say No

It’s okay to say no to someone if you are limited on time. Be polite and explain why you don’t have time; it will help maintain trust that you are doing something work related and not personal. People will understand and it will help you draw effective lines and be productive.

  1. Schedule Productive Meetings and Stay On Time and On Task

Make meetings efficient by sticking to your agenda. Create effective agendas that focus on the purpose of the meeting. Limit small talk at meetings and save time.

  1. Don’t Do Things Twice

Make a folder of “done” items. Once you finish a project, place it in the “done” folder. This will help you stay on task and keep you moving forward. Focus on one project until it is “done” then move on, This will avoid doing the same thing twice or going back to second guess your work.

  1. Set A Schedule To Check Emails

Check emails at intervals throughout the day. Don’t try to check emails as the come into your inbox. You will not get the bigger projects done because you will be trying to “put out the little fires” when you should be letting them burn. (See number 3)

  1. Delegate Or Ask For Help

There is never a time to be too proud to ask for help. If you are a manager delegate to your team and if you are working with the team ask co-workers to help with bigger projects. It helps you become less stressed and it helps build social capital.

  1. Don’t Multi-Task

If you multi-task you will end up missing something. Focus on one project or task at a time until it is done. Then place it in the “done” pile. Focus will help you get the bigger tasks done.

  1. Disappear

You don’t always have to physically disappear. You can put on music or close your door to get projects done. Leave a note on the door saying what you are working on if you really want to build trust among your team. It sometimes also might help to work from home if you know you can get more done when working on a specific project. Home can really help if you share an office with someone. If you do this, look at number 9.

Use these tips to feel better and be more productive at work today and everyday. Good Luck.
